KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN INTERVIEW: Pirate Borg Boarding Party: Kawe's Pirate Borg Miniatures - Westfalia Miniatures

With us following Limithron's Pirate Borg Boarding Party Summer, we have been lucky again to get an interview with miniature designer Kawe of Westfalia Miniatures, designer of some Trench Crusade Miniatures, Deathbringer Miniatures from Dungeon Craft and Professor DM fame and now the forthcoming miniatures to help make Pirate Borg maps awesome for each player (one of the three that are creating and designing new things for Pirate Borg this summer with each one running a funding campaign via kickstarter whom you can support via the following links:

Westfalia's Pirate Borg Miniatures

From the Depths Below

Limithron's Pirate Map Collection

Each has successfully smashed their initial goals with over 20 days left to go, and so we couldn't wait to show you some of the fabulous work that Kawe has done previously to give you an idea of what is yet to come...
(Images are of completed miniatures that were designed by Kawe and whilst not Pirate Borg (they're from Trench Crusade), you can see images of the PB mini's on the campaign page listed above.)

Totally Pawsome:  How do you work out which themes to create pieces for?

Kawe: Stuff we like! And it obviously helps if something is popular to start with.

TP:  What would you say sells your miniatures to people?

K: Design, Quality and reliability.

TP:  What is the turn around time from designing a concept to having it ready for printing?

K: That varies widely - between 1 week and 1 month.

TP:  What is your favourite piece that you've created and why?

K:  There are too many, but I very much like Aguirre piece from last year.  https://www.westfaliaminiatures.com/product-page/aguirre

TP:  Coming up with a piece is often an idea that gets written into a journal to come back to. How often do you find yourself working on one piece and another comes to mind and can you give an example?

K:  Constantly

TP:  What do you think is most inspiring about your miniatures and why?

K:  We're trying to do original stuff. Sounds cheesey, but it's really about exploring new concepts.

TP:  Where do you see your business taking you in 5 years?

K:  I stay right where I am. I like how things are. :--)

TP:  If you were given the time and opportunity to create anything you wanted what would it be and why?

K:  Probably extensive scenery projects.

TP:  Who do you admire in the fantasy community and why?

K:  They're real people.

TP:  What got you all into TTRPG's in the first place?

K:  Red Box D&D - how could anybody resist buying that?

We hope to be able to bring the final interview from the campaign (Limithrons) to you prior to the campaigns ending with updates.

Thank you,

KICKSTARTER: Pirate Borg: Boarding Party Summer: From the Depths Below - LIMITHRON

One of the games that grabbed our attention at UKGE was Pirate Borg with the deliciously dark and tempting supplement "From the Depths Below" (which hits kickstarter today as part of Limithron's Boarding Party Campaign which is three campaigns together (the other two being: Westfalia's Pirate Borg Miniatures and Limithron's Pirate Map Collection.)  We were lucky enough to grab a bit of time with Will, creator of "From the Depths Below," and as we can't wait to dive into our own supernatural adventures on the seven sea's we just had to find out a bit more about this title as well as about Will themselves...

Totally Pawsome:  As a creator of From the Depth's Below, what inspired you to design it and with it coming to Kickstarter what do you feel it brings to a table that will have people falling in love with the setting?

Will RD:  Creating different settings for Forbidden Psalm has always been the goal so that people can play whatever setting that they like the most. Pirates was one that I got asked about a lot and when I started chatting with Limithron last year it all fell into place. It was a no brainer and soon as I started the project it flowed so easily. Making a game that was both fun to play, silly and horror themed all at the same time was such a blast to do.

TP:  What would you say is the best selling point of your expansion and what does it have in common with your other releases?

WRD:  As a stand alone game it offers everything a player needs to get playing. If you've played Forbidden Psalm before there is a whole new campaign, ship to ship combat, pirate captains and so much more. If your new to Forbidden Psalm there has never been a better time to get involved. This game adds everything you need with no other books required to play. With the Pirate Maps by Limithron, miniatures by Westfalia you can get everything you need to play From the Depths Below. If you like skirmish wargames, narrative games and random tables this might be a game for you. The game is still based off of the core rules of Forbidden Psalm, so its easy to pick and learn and the award winning game design is still in place. But now you get to add a whole manner of madness and fun to your games. New monsters, weapons, a full narrative campaign and pirate captain hats.

TP:  Within From the Depths below do you have a favourite character that you designed and why?

WRD:  I think that less a character and more a piece of equipment haha. So each captain has a pirate captains hat and my favourite is the living octopus hat that either gives you or your opponent benefits in combat depending how the octopus feels. I am also fond of the Deep Sea Corpse Collector a shark variant of the same creature from Forbidden psalm.

TP:  How do you see From the Depths below developing the Pirate Borg setting and what can you tell us anything about future products?

WRD:  From the Depths below adds a whole narrative campaign to Pirate Borg that offers a detailed story of stopping a cosmic horror from beneath the waves. It adds monsters and new weapons to the RPG but also stands as its own skirmish wargame. So if people are RPG players or more into miniatures there is something here for them. It can also be run along side the TTRPG to add more tactical combat to games of Pirate Borg. Future projects end of this year there is a redesigned edition of Last War coming with all new art and layout [core rules have not changed] and a full expansion called into the Dead Woods!

TP:  When you created the book what were the key things you wanted to include and why?

WRD:  Unlike in other Forbidden Psalm games where you do not have a leader in the same way I wanted the pirate captains to be a major feature and so crew creation is very much centred around who your captain is and what class they belong to. I also wanted ship to ship combat as felt that it would not be a pirate game without the ability to fire cannons at each other and NPCs.

TP:  Who do you think would love to play your Pirate Borg and why?

WRD:  If you like roleplay games that take no time to learn and get you right into the game Pirate Borg is for you. Pirate borg is the perfect blend of the OSR philosophy and silly fun. If you like pirates you should check it out.

TP:  Where do you see your TTRPG writing career taking you in 5 years?

WRD:  Honestly no idea, when I set out to make games 6 years ago I did not predict it would be my full time career. so now that it is I guess I hope that remains the same and I keep making things people like. Failing that I might become a hermit or live in the woods somewhere. Lately I have been doing more and more of my own art tho and that has been a blast to do.

TP:  If budget was not a problem and you had an infinite fund to call upon, what do you think you'd like to develop and bring to the fore?

WRD:  I would love to convert Forbidden Psalm and its family of games into turn based combat video games if budget was no option. Another dream of mine is to create a big art book based off of my roleplay groups game that has been going for around 20 years now. The word and setting have been shaped by players and I would love to see that realised.

TP:  Who do you admire in the Independent TTRPG writing space and why?

WRD:  For me it is the authenticity of it all. You see people making art, sure to make money and live but mostly because they feel driven to create weird, wonderful and inspiring worlds and games. The refusal to give into AI, to 'sell out' and to make things people want to see made. Speaking with other creators and seeing people so passionate about games regardless of who will play them is a joy. I want to be clear I also see value in the mass produced TTRPGs as well. It's like some people want that mass produced food and others want a home cooked meal. Both can fill you up but they come from a different place and offer different experiences.

TP:  What got you into TTRPG's in the first place?

WRD:  I was the typical nerdy kid, bullied and too shy to do other things. Meeting other people that wanted to play games is what got me into them back when I was 14. What has kept me is the way the way in which RPG players come together to undertake a ritual of storytelling collectively, that is as old as mankind.

For more on this campaign, keep up to date with us alongside others in this Summer of Boarding Fun as we prepare to hoist the mainsail and keep those scabrous dogs in order...

Thank you,

NEWS: Pirate Borg additions preparing to set sail - Limithron, Westfalia Miniatures

Hail Mighty Readers and Followers of the Luck Gods Math Rocks,

There are times when the news rains hard and times when its pretty damn dry, but today we have a plethora of updates tied to Pirate Borg from Limithron, who having recently returned successfully from their mission to raid UKGE 2026, have raised the sails and hoisted their flags for their next exciting adventure for this year.

With booty aplunder and previews of From the Depths Below, (the skirmish game from Will RD and Alexander (Ravaged by Storms) which is compatible with Pirate Borg.  (Coming to Kickstarter soon (7th Jul 2026.)

Yet as the crew were away, a few things were happening at home base, with the lead item being the free RPG day adventure on 27th June 2026 (or as a sneaky item for those attending Origins Game Fair next week,) Terror of Tortuga, where in a sandbox environment you work with famed figures Anne Bonney or Calico Jack, to take out the Ghoul Lord who has devoured and enslaved many a good scallywag.

The zine comes with quickstart rules, so folks can dive right in, and it’s 100% free at participating game shops. Seriously, don’t get fooled into paying for it.

Patreon

Over on their Patreon Limithron, have been releasing previews of their new Encounter Atlas, Pirate Borg book, where those who sail the sea's, can have random encounters, descriptive tables and of course a whole heap of treasured tidbits that reference their battlemaps to make it something epic.

This will be coming to kickstarter soon so click here to sign up to be notified once the sails have been set (7th July 2026).

Round Up

Finally to tie everything up, if you're a fan of miniatures and having a fab board to play on the whole thing is set up to work together as a conglomerate under the Pirate King/Queen (yet to be announced as they're all still arguing who should get the nicest hat LOL) with fabulous miniatures designed by our friends at Westfalia (who have also designed miniatures for Trench Crusade (a prime example being the Communicants who I've fallen in love with.) which is also launching on Kickstarter soon.

NEWS ROUND UP: Kickstarter Wrapping Up for Firebase: Horizon Station and Cogfort Alternate - Dark Fantastic Mills

Hail Mighty Readers and Followers of the Luck Gods Math Rocks,

We're doing a bit of a round up with the latest news from our friends, Dark Fantastic Mills.  Starting with their Kickstarter, Firebase: Horizon Station we wanted to remind you that it closes shortly (29th May 2026) so if you're going to want to join, you'll have to do it quickly.

Here's what they had to say about it:
"Firebase: Horizon Station has romped along, and is now entering the final week (it ends of the 29th of May).  So far we've unlocked 20 Goals (hopefully 21 or 22 by the time you read this), taking the overall number of models in the set to over 160!"

Secondly, if you're an Age of Sigmar fan, you are more than aware of the soon to be released Cogfort, and whilst a fair few people have waited, the Steam Fort from Dark Fantastic Mills range has exploded (not literally, we're not to blame for over pressurising the boiler) in popularity both in its physical Miniature and STL version, which they've shrunk to work wonderfully well with the AoS Scale.

This week, in honour of its launch, it comes in  20% less and whilst its ready now, DFM are hard at work on an Ironclad version which will be available in June.

All the best,

NEWS: Gamefound Campaign: Caverns Reforged - Dwarven Forge

Hail Mighty Readers and Followers of the Luck Gods Rocks,

Our friends at Dwarven Forge have let us know about their next Gamefound Project.  This is what they've had to say:

"We've got a surprise campaign launching next month! Caverns Reforged will be our next Gamefound project, going live Tuesday, May 19th. This will be a simpler project than normal, more akin to our first Gamefound project, Wildlands Reforged.

While we're not making any new sculpts, we're using this opportunity to produce pieces in paint schemes we never have before, make hard-to-get pieces accessible, and even revive and update sets from our original Caverns Kickstarter in 2014! Let's take a brief look at what you can expect.

First and foremost, we're focusing on the three paint schemes from our Caverns Deep Kickstarter: Standard, Ice, and Underdoom. While every piece in that campaign was made in Standard, the Ice and Underdoom selection was limited.

Over the years we've produced some sets of paint variants that weren't in the campaign, like the Natural Bridge. However, there were still a lot of gaps, and we're going to do all of those now. Cave Cliffs, Passages, every basic building piece will be in all three colors after Caverns Reforged!

Back in 2014, we ran our first Caverns campaign. While most of the pieces we produced then were replaced and improved upon in Caverns Deep, there are some sculpts--like the Narrow Passages and Stalagmites--that we're reviving, magnetized and painted in updated Standard, Ice, and Underdoom!

There are also several pieces from Caverns Deep itself that have been hard to find, buries in Adventure Packs that we couldn't restock. We're making brand new dressing packs so those wonderful setpieces like the Heartshard and Shamanic Circle will be easy to grab and use in your games!

Some of you have asked about the variety of unique miniatures we made during Caverns Deep as well. While we're prioritizing the terrain, we've included some of the miniatures in dressing packs where appropriate, and we'll have stretch goals for unlocking sets for the rest of the miniatures!

Also, if you follow the campaign before we launch, you'll get the Prisoner mini added to your pledge for free!

All the best,

ThunderMouser

FORTHCOMING BACKERKIT CAMPAIGN: Spawns of the Mindrender - Elderbrain

Our friends at Elderbrain updated us today about one of the items within their forthcoming Spawns of the Mindrender which launches live on the 5th May at 1200PM ET which is being run on Backerkit and if you follow early you get a delightful 15% off as a follower discount code.

Todays update brings to the table The Vordani Battletech:

The Vordani reject magic, so they have mastered machinery instead. Their answer to spellcasters, monsters, and rival clans is Battletech: brutal exosuits and weapon systems powered by kinetic energy and engineered for war. These devices appear throughout the campaign and can be operated, repaired, or mastered by characters who train in their use. Below is a full overview of all known Battletech gear found in the land of Vordan:

Battleframes are light, mobile exoskeletons worn over armor, built for frontline berserkers. They allow their wearers to wield oversized weapons with speed and stability:

Sawblade Arm – Spinning forearm disc that deals heavy slashing damage and tears deeper on crits.

Pulverizer Hammer – Piston-driven hammer delivering concussive blows, knocking enemies prone.

Lance Driver – Reinforced charging spike that deals extra damage after moving.

Spear Launcher – Short-range bolt launcher built into the frame.

Flayer Blades – Spinning shoulder blades that lash all nearby enemies.

Razor Ring Shield – A shield with a spinning blade that retaliates when foes miss.

Warhusks are heavy, nonmagical exoskeletal vehicles. They enhance Strength, boost AC, and turn their pilots into a walking siege engine. Warhusks impose penalties to Dexterity and movement, but massively enhance raw power and durability. A warhusk can carry three modular weapon systems from these options:

Sawblade Arm – High-damage rotating disc for brutal melee attacks.

Pulverizer Hammer – Piston hammer that knocks targets prone.

Lance Driver – Armor-piercing strike with bonus charge damage.

Flame Belcher – Shoulder-mounted flamethrower (20-ft cone).

Spear Launcher – Heavy bolt launcher dealing serious piercing damage.

Flayer Blades – Spiked chains that shred nearby creatures.

Saw Shield – Reactive spinning shield that damages attackers.

Vordani ammunition and specialty bolts are used with crossbows or mounted ballistae.

Chain Bolt – Fires a trailing chain to pull targets or anchor shots.

Shrapnel Bolt – Explodes into shards on impact.

Ignition Bolt – Ignites targets and flammable terrain.

Shredder Bolt – A spinning, embedded disc that continues shredding on the next turn.

Vordani bombs are thrown mechanical grenades engineered for battlefield control. Some of the more unique ones are:

Ooze Bomb – Acid burst that slows enemies and creates difficult terrain.

Mold Bomb – Necrotic spore cloud that poisons and blinds.

Rust Bomb – Corrosive dust that weakens nonmagical metal weapons and armor.

Also those who have signed up also get the opportunity to vote to Shape the Adventure by casting your vote in their latest poll that decides the nature of the creature(s) that inhabit the dungeon that they're about to create.

Spawn of the Mindrend is set to be 2014 and 2024 Dungeons and Dragons compatible and with this, you get:

A Sandbox Campaign and Kingdom Map

20+ Unique Dungeon Maps,

24 New Subclasses (two for each class)

50+ New Monsters

30+ Unique Magical Weapons, Poisons and Tools

20+ Unique Spells and Feats

10+ Fully Fleshed out Factions

Rules to run the chaos of a battlefield

“All Stars is like a full-contact version of NBA Basketball, with lots of opportunities to score, and just as many opportunities to flatten the opposition!”

- Designer, Jervis Johnson.

Which to be honest is our way of thinking.  We're not much into the scoring aspect but hey, if the other team is incapacitated already, you may as well get a point or two.  lol

Each game is played in one of four unique arena's (our favourite is the Battle Royale) where your six players seek to gain the adoration of the crowds by scoring and maiming as legendary players, each build their career, as you learn to master their quirks, their skills and tactical advantages.

Sign up now to avoid disappointment as its already hit its goal and charging headlong to the launch date, ready to roll.  With various pledge price points, that'll grab your attention and our personal favourite of the All in Upgrade (which is there at £199) it'll have you with everything available and ready to roll for a good nights krumpin. Lets get it on.

All the best,

ThunderMouser.
