EDITORS POST: Warhammer 11th Edition Concerns - ThunderMouser

s we near the release of 11th Edition, with the rumours and "leaks" that have so far appeared one of my biggest concerns is to do with the newly proposed Secondary objectives.  Not that its brand new but I worry that the shapes of them are going to be a little unfair.

Getting rid of the circles is a great idea but with it now going to be scenery rather than just a marked blotch on the landscape I do worry that if it were to be made any other shape than circular that it could easily be utilised by the player placing it for greater advantage towards themselves giving their area more space to occupy so that their troops don't have to travel so far.

And whilst the two battlegrounds that have been released in the Warhammer Community post go to show that the board is quite fair with mirror image set ups, I still worry that a big part of the narrative part that they're trying to include is going to be missed.  After all, when you look at them boards, troop transports are going to have a hard time getting through without taking massive detours that could have them being redundant for a huge chunk of the game.

That said, I do have high hopes with them saying that the game is going to be more narratively driven and each army will have goals that they want to achieve be it the annihilation of their foes or which piece of ground to hold, will be pretty cool with each battle becoming its own story that the players will love to tell.  However whilst this is a great option, one of my biggest bugbears and something that I think they really need to address is that you can't destroy terrain, surely if the building has been splattered, pitted and falling apart, that means that its not indestructible and with people being able to hide troops within it does feel like a missed opportunity especially when within the books characters have been able to call down things like orbital strikes or bombardments that would do the job nicely.

Its something that really needs to be looked into and with GW releasing various terrain for the objectives they do need to look at options like making them army themed for example an ork ammo dump will be chaos whereas a marine one will be organised.

All round I am hopeful that the new edition will give the players a lot more freedom especially now that they're going to have to think of ways round being unable to stack multiple bonuses upon one unit which used to make them unkillable, but another thing that has me concerned is what happens if you don't buy all the new books for the end campaign of 10th with strategies for specific troops, will these then be provided in the new codices when available or will it be a case you need to have subscribed to the Warhammer App to get everything required?

It is a big question and one that is all going to depend upon which way GW is thinking of going.  As their approach currently is to talk about new mini's with higher price hikes that plays on peoples FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) reaction (especially with this weeks release of Defilers which has been grossly under stocked) before they have real chance to think purchases through.

Yet at the end of the day, the way that everything is going price wise, whether its to play in a tournament such as Adepticon or keeping up with the miniatures, its making it an "exclusive" hobby that heavily limits opportunities to play other games keeping you either fully in 40K or Age of Sigmar leaving those who have been with them since the beginning having to seriously think about alternate wargames options with more reasonable pricing from other Independent Companies.

MINIATURE PAINTING: Dinosaur Skull and Rocks - Sculpt: Artisan Guild

I'm always trying to improve my painting so when I saw the dino skull sculpt from Artisan's Guild I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.  Surrounded by rocks and partially buried, this item just spoke to me and I knew that it was going to be not only fun but a challenge.  Why?

Well most people tend to think of skulls or bone as yellow, yes sunbleached it could be, but when you look at a lot of them, there is subtle shades of grey, white and of course yes, a slight yellowing to brown.  So what did I do, that made mine a little different.

Firstly I looked at some old bones and made notes of the colours within, I then rummaged through my paints and brought a few out to get started.  Unless otherwise stated paint colours are from Army painter (box set listed next to the colour).

PRIMER:  White Scar - Citadel

Rocks:

Base:  Necromancer Cloak (Mega Paint set)

Highlight:  Uniform Grey (Mega Paint Set)

Finer Highlight:  Ash Grey (Mega Paint Set)

Very light finishing dry brush:  Matt White (Mega Paint Set)

Skull:

Base:  Palid Bone (Speedpaint Mega Set)

First Drybrush: Uniform Grey (Mega Paint Set)

Finer Drybrush:  Ash Grey (Mega Paint Set)

Light Drybrush:  Skeleton Bone (Mega Paint Set)

Highlight Drybrush:  Matt White (Mega Paint Set

Whilst this does sound complex it is quite easy, you carefully apply the base colours to the correct place and then, using your Dry Brush (I use a make up brush as I find they're ideal) going round area's add less and less as you move up to the later layers.

All round, it is simple and to be honest, something I've learned is to always have a look for something that exists in the real world to help you look at the various colours and how they work.  Its always more of a combo than any singular colour and whether you add a touch of white or black to lighten or darken your original colour, you will always find a different way to make the piece your own.

MINIATURE PAINTING: Dwarf Mohawk Bust - Tytantroll

Hail Mighty Readers and Rollers of the Math Rocks,

I was going through Etsy a few weeks ago, finding some mini's that I couldn't wait to get my hands on and then discovered a Dwarf Bust from Tytantroll that spoke to my inner Warhammer soul (this isn't an official item though), as back in the 90's I build a Dwarven Warhammer Army around my core Slayer unit.

So when this item landed I couldn't wait to get started.

Disclaimer:  Paints and bust were purchased with my own money and whilst other ranges are available, these are the ones I had on hand to use.

Primer:  Citadel: White Scar

Colours listed are from the Army Painter range:

Hair and Beard:

Yellow: Demonic Yellow (Mega Paint Set)

Orange: Fire Giant Orange (Speed Paint)

Red:  Slaughter Red (Speed Paint

Skin:

Barbarian Flesh (Mega Paint Set)
Flesh Wash (Mega Paint Set)

Lip: Tanned Flesh (Mega Paint Set)
Teeth:  Skeleton Bone (Mega Paint set) dry brushed with Matt White (Mega Paint Set)

So having primed I started with the hair and I originally painted it Orange, then worked the red into the lower area and refined it with Mega Paint sets Lava Orange so that I had more of a flame effect and then did the top part with the yellow and dry brushed the orange and red parts with the yellow to help them all blend together.

After this I worked on the skin details and liberally applied the flesh wash after working on the teeth.  All round its not an overly complex project but one I did have a ton of fun with and I can't wait to tackle other busts that grab my fancy.

Hope this helps,

ThunderMouser.

MINIATURE PAINTING AND SCENERY MAKES: Full disclosure (with incompetence) - Thunder Mouser

Hello, Greetings and Salutations,

OK, I feel like I need to add a little clarity to the whole model painting. I originally started when I was 13 and loved spending my time painting my Orc and Goblin Army, some undead figures, then finally moved on to an Eldar and finally Lizardman Army. (This was way back in which was way back in 1997.) Then sadly I left the hobby and recently, having asked myself what would make me happy, I returned to the TTRPG family and having gotten back, looked up models and was totally wowed by all the ones available, especially with 3d printing.

Now first off I am not an expert painter and with so much having happened in the hobby in the 25 years I've been out, I will be starting again as a newbie, so if you want to walk this journey with me, hopefully we can all learn from each other and through our own endeavours we can all get there with models we'll not only be proud of but can't wait to play with.

Now because I'm getting on (yeah I know I'm old), I'm looking at painting models on the 50mm scale (new measurements to follow), as when printed at 28 and 32mm, I really have problems focusing on the details. (And yes I wear specs.) So anything I do will be related to that size or bigger, including figuring out everything needed for scenery, buildings etc. Its definitely going to be fun and with my prototype materials purchased for battle map 1.0, I will hopefully generate a lot of fun things that you too can make (provided I don't stick my fingers together.)

Everything is going to be done without spending a fortune, on a budget, with finding ways to increase usefulness whilst reducing storage and as you can guess will look hodge podge until the skills develop (but thats what stampedes and dinosaurs are for in this hobby (its intention, they ruined it, not my incompetence), but thats half the fun, after all if you don't do or try, you will never succeed or make things better. As you'll have already seen I am working on things like colour plans for the models, working on how the shadow and shading will come through and with practical examples that I can share, we can all have fun exploring this hobby. So please join me on this journey and have as much fun in the hobby as I hope to.
