TTRPG INDEPENDENT CREATOR FEATURE: The Shady Sail

Whilst you always tend to hear of the big names in the TTRPG Community, a lot of the time, its the smaller people who create stories, adventures and items that really help the players get something truly wonderful that improves the experience.  Its to this end, that we want to run features on the individua;/independents that bring their sense of whimsy alongside fun things to the community whilst also sharing their geeky love.

For our first post in this area, we could think of no better company than The Shady Sail, a family team who brought affordable goods to the players table rather than concentrating on Premium wood or resin goods that due to rarity and craftmanship prices a fair number of community members out of being able to own.  .

To this end, there is perhaps no clearer sign of this than the fact that they sat back and thought about how to create the very things we all covet to their own storefront, providing not only a friendly atmosphere but also giving everyone the chance to buy that mini that you've been hankering for or a dice box that not only looks cool but is a thing of beauty you'll love to utilise at the table.

Here we got a chance to have a chat about themselves and things that they love as well as having the opportunity to show thier wares:

Totally Pawsome:  When was the business launched and how did you pick its name?
Shady Sail:  April 2nd 2022 and we used a random tavern name generator and altered it to fit something we liked a bit more.

TP:  What is your business best known for?
SS:  On TikTok Magnetic Dungeon Tiles, On twitter our Collab Dice Cases!

TP:  Why the TTRPG space?
SS:  We're NERDS: Natisha has always been into gaming starting Pathfinder at the age of 9 and Doug started playing DnD when he was 13 and we met in a local game shop playing MTG.

TP:  What is your favourite product that you produce?

SS:  Dougs favorite is the Cascade Crisis Skywhale and Natishas favorite is the Skull Dice Case.

TP:  How do you see the business developing in the next five years?

SS:  We hope to add a lot more collaborations expanding what we offer including custom painted minis by Doug.

TP:  How do you decide which products to create and sell?

SS:  Random spark of creativity for unique items, but we love connecting and making deals with artists that create 3D models that aren’t equipped for fulfillment so we can give access to their designs to a broader community.

TP:  Whilst you do take commissions, what guidelines do you have in place?

SS:  Case by case, we love hearing peoples ideas and working with them to make them tangible. We aren’t cheap but we try to base our price based on how much we like the project and what the client can afford.

TP:  If you were given the time and opportunity to develop something unique for yourselves, what would it be and why?

SS:  A MTG spinning life counter inspired by the New Capenna set.

TP:  What do you think are the best services you offer to others in the TTRPG space and why?

SS:  We love sponsoring and collaborating with people in the community and have support artists, writers, AP streamers and podcaters with illustrations, dice cases, cosplay props and such. We just want to see the community thrive.

TP:  Competition between independent business is at an all time high, as a small business what makes you unique that you feel helps show customers why they should do business with you?

SS:  We have no interest in competition, we care about the community and collaboration! If we lose business because we support another maker we are happy to see the other maker thriving. We offer unique and custom 3D printed goods conceptualized by the community for the community and I think that speaks for itself.

MINIATURE PAINTING: What to do if a Resin Print Breaks - Thunder Mouser.

OK so you got some individually printed Resin Mini's, however one of them broke because it needed to rely on a very thin and small piece to keep it together.  What are you going to do?

Well there's two options, firstly you can use as small drill and pin it together using part of a paper clip, which sadly I tried and it failed to take as it rebroke further up, and secondly you can do what I decided to do and make up some guts out of green stuff and have them hanging down the leg slightly to help sell the effect.

Ok its not very novel, but it does add a little extra flavour to your model and of course will look even cooler on the table.  So what do you do?  How do you save a model?

TTRPG Thoughts: What shall we do with Thieves Cant? - Thunder Mouser

In every game, there are some aspects that feel like they're something left over from an earlier edition or something that people either under utilise or are not quite sure what to do with it.  Thieves Cant is one of these, so we had a think about what we could suggest for people to do, that would allow the thieves to feel special as they can use it as well as finding something special that would allow a whole heap of future adventures for the whole table.

So what did we come up with?

After a long hard think we decided that perhaps the Thieves Guild in your world, could use coins much like the ones in John Wick, where thieves cant lets those who know what services are on offer to members of the guild, if they have the special coins to buy them with.

OK, so the idea of implementing this is probably something that many have thought of before hand, however think about it.
How would the characters earn the coins?
What is the value of them?
What could they spend them on?
Well look at it this way, they could earn them by doing jobs for the thieves guild, be it assassinations, robberies, removing treasures from a location, supplying services such as protection for jobs and of course everyone's favourite, being able to trade magical items that may be illicit to the guild.

So now we know how they could earn them, how could they spend them?
Well, pretty much like John Wick, whatever you need if you want it done quietly, you want a poison, see if the herbalist is in league with the thieves guild with a special sigil that only your rogue can detect, you want information about a location, hand signals that only those with the thieves guild know or if you want a body disappeared, there's someone for that too.

The possibilities are pretty much endless and it all allows you as the DM to have a whole heap of side jobs that can interweave and allow your players access to information, that provided they have the special coin for it, may provide something novel that will help either further the overall arc or perhaps lead them in a whole new direction.  Its also a great way to have clues drop into their lap if they've missed some of what you deem critical information.

All round, this has only really been a cursory post on our part, but we wanted to get this out there so that it could be utilised as soon as possible to hopefully add some extra flavour to your game.  We hope you have fun with it.

INDEPENDENT TTRPG SUPPLIMENT: Secrets of Sylvera Academy - Various

Release Date:  April 23

Publisher: Single Step Gaming

SYNOPSIS:

Our "Secrets of the Sylvera Academy" series will contain new and inventive spells for casters of all stripes, plus some world-specific lore and story to whet your interest. The spells listed here are designed for our specific "5E Compatible" setting, but in places where any rules changes have been made that would lead to confusion when attempting to use with 5E or other 5E compatible systems, a "Generic 5E variant" is included in [brackets] in the text box. The purpose of this series is designed to be a broad-lensed product, so if your 5E is controlled by Coastal Wizards, if your group has leveled up, if your party raises the black flag, or if you plan to summon a simulacrum later this year, these spells will work at your table and in your campaigns.

REVIEW:

A kickstarter project that was funded in under 20 minutes and by a publisher with their heart of their sleeve as a portion of the sales of this book on Itchio and DriveThru will for perpetuity go to Trans Lifeline, a charity run for Trans people by Trans people.

What this book brings to the fore is some alternate spellcasting and not only a whole heap of spells to utilise for extra flavour in your TTRPG game (they're creating their own world later this year so its a sneaky peaky into whats to come) but also the ability to start a duel against other wizards. (Provided criteria are met.)

Each spell within has its own unique flavour (90 of them) and with the accompanying art really helps bring something a little extra to your game. Currently a number of the stretch goals have been reached with the publisher hoping to get to £2000 so that they can then release volume 2 in addition.

Back this up with nicely designed pages, easy to access format that will feel familiar to fans of DnD alongside a plethora of accompanying art and its a project that really has had a lot of love from the creators alongside imagination and will also work with other systems out there.

All round, when you get to see the fabulous art, and see the talent linked to this title, you really have to wonder how its being funded for so little, and I get the feeling that as word spreads about whats contained within, this original release will make its way to quite a few gaming tables. Finally if you do with you add to the crowd fund please visit: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/secondclasselitist/secrets-of-the-sylvera-academy-40-5e-spells

Thank you.

MINIATURE BUILDING BLUEPRINT - Standard House - Thunder Mouser

Hello, Greetings and Salutations,

Today we decided to work on our first blueprint for a house, we wanted something we could have fun with that would be able to be used in various incarnations for multiple locations.

Each layer is built upon a chipboard base so you can assemble and disassemble it as you wish and if you halve the measurements, you could design it so that you could set up a Hollywood style set for you characters to roam around which would also stack up for easy storage, the only thing you'd have to do is build extra roofs.

Hopefully when we get the materials, we'll build our prototype and take photo's so you can see how it all works out.

Other plans we have in the works include a dock set, a public house, defense objects and things like wattle and daub fences. We really hope you'll join us in our projects and fun, and as each item is built we'll include a list of materials and hopefully a You-Tube Video that you can watch to laugh at my two left hands. LOL

MINIATURE PAINTING AND SCENERY MAKES: Full disclosure (with incompetence) - Thunder Mouser

Hello, Greetings and Salutations,

OK, I feel like I need to add a little clarity to the whole model painting. I originally started when I was 13 and loved spending my time painting my Orc and Goblin Army, some undead figures, then finally moved on to an Eldar and finally Lizardman Army. (This was way back in which was way back in 1997.) Then sadly I left the hobby and recently, having asked myself what would make me happy, I returned to the TTRPG family and having gotten back, looked up models and was totally wowed by all the ones available, especially with 3d printing.

Now first off I am not an expert painter and with so much having happened in the hobby in the 25 years I've been out, I will be starting again as a newbie, so if you want to walk this journey with me, hopefully we can all learn from each other and through our own endeavours we can all get there with models we'll not only be proud of but can't wait to play with.

Now because I'm getting on (yeah I know I'm old), I'm looking at painting models on the 50mm scale (new measurements to follow), as when printed at 28 and 32mm, I really have problems focusing on the details. (And yes I wear specs.) So anything I do will be related to that size or bigger, including figuring out everything needed for scenery, buildings etc. Its definitely going to be fun and with my prototype materials purchased for battle map 1.0, I will hopefully generate a lot of fun things that you too can make (provided I don't stick my fingers together.)

Everything is going to be done without spending a fortune, on a budget, with finding ways to increase usefulness whilst reducing storage and as you can guess will look hodge podge until the skills develop (but thats what stampedes and dinosaurs are for in this hobby (its intention, they ruined it, not my incompetence), but thats half the fun, after all if you don't do or try, you will never succeed or make things better. As you'll have already seen I am working on things like colour plans for the models, working on how the shadow and shading will come through and with practical examples that I can share, we can all have fun exploring this hobby. So please join me on this journey and have as much fun in the hobby as I hope to.

As a vampire, you suffer the pangs of the Hunger, the relentless and terrible thirst for human blood. This is the original and ultimate roleplaying game of personal and political horror.

While the rules have been redesigned, this new edition honors the deep story of the original, advancing the metaplot from where it left off and detailing exactly what has happened in the world of the Kindred up until tonight.

Mature Warning: contains graphic and written content of a mature nature, including violence, sexual themes, and strong language. Reader discretion is advised.

As a vampire, struggle for survival, supremacy, and your own fading humanity Suffer the pangs of Hunger, while navigating undead politics and avoiding deadly hunters. Honors the history of Vampire: The Masquerade while advancing the story with streamlined 5th Edition rules.

REVIEW:

Ok, I'm returning to Vampire the Masquerade decades after I last played (2) and there have been quite a few changes from the earlier version I played to this one. The key one being that you no longer have a blood pool to utilise your powers and this mechanic has been replaced with hunger dice which can, and will, play havoc with your rolls.

Its a great new mechanic that always gives the player a chance to have to be inventive alongside the DM whether you roll, what Dumb Dumbs and Dice call a "Messy Successy" (when you pass your roll but the hunger dice comes up 10) where things will succeed but in a rather messed up way with consequences as your beast pushes it through, or a critical failure (where you roll a 1 on the hunger dice) with no successes leads to other consequences such as being spotted etc with repercussions.

Its definitely a fun mechanic and really leaves the players on tenterhooks as the dice are rolled. But other than this mechanic, what else does the core book bring to the table?

To be honest, its full of beautiful art, but for me the biggest problem is that it feels pretty jumbled in the order it appears, so much so that I have to break it down as follows:
1) Character creation feels pretty messy if you follow the step by step in the book and its so much easier if you create at the same time as following a You-Tube video who explains it in detail, however this is a failure in the system.

2) The reference system for finding information is pretty haphazard so if you have to find a piece of information, it can take you out of the game as the Storyteller, takes 10-20 minutes to find the nugget they're looking for.

Don't get me wrong, if you love Urban Fantasy it is a really cool game to play but when you need help as a newbie to build your character and have to spend time rereading to understand some of the information that isn't clearly worded it can leave you feeling out of sorts with the whole game and might leave a number of people wondering why they bother.

All in, the World of Darkness is a very cool world and whilst I understand that each itteration of the various inhabitants takes time to get out there, I'm a little sad that currently you're restricted to either Vamps or Hunters, with the Were's, Mages and Wraiths still a long way off. Finally I will play VtM and I look forward to weaving various adventures but when the clans are heavily restricted (you have to buy other books to get full access to all of the playable clans), it does leave a bitter taste that having spent so long commissioning the art and getting its placement within, that they weren't able to deliver something more comprehensive and easily understood.

TTRPG REVIEW: Dead Letter Society - Rori Montford

Release Date:  07/03/23

Publisher: Digital (DriveThru)

SYNOPSIS:

Dead Letter Society is a two-player game of letter writing and journaling. Each player assumes the role of a vampire with hopes, dreams, and fears. During the game, the vampires write letters to each other, asking questions, giving advice, discussing their intentions, revealing secrets, and speculating on curiosities discovered over time. Between writing letters, the vampires delve into topics that interest them and learn more about the world around them.

This game can be played in person, remotely, or a mix of both styles. Modifications for solo play and shorter games are also included.

REVIEW:

Im a TTRPGer who loves to look at new concepts and delve deep into the mythos alongside being able to find a way to create a story that is not only unique but something that doesn't always require 4 or more players, which is why this offering from Montford Tales is something that a lot of people are going to have a ton of fun around.

Within this game, two players, get to play the classic undead who through time and letters weave intricate stories that allows the world to fully develop in such a way that its not only organic but you can literally see the pulse as each character fleshes out their own world as they uncover clues to thier grand mystère.

Its definitely unique, gets each person to think about questions and responses whilst all round generating an epic offering that could easily be turned into novels and for me, the firing of the imagination throughout this title, really does give the players an experience that will linger, longing for each new letter to see what is to come. A truly wonderful experience.

Dead Letter Society has been fully crowd funded and for all the latest updates please visit the authors own website here.
