BACKERKIT LIVE: Rangers of a Broken World - Evil Hat Productions

Hail Mighty Readers and Followers of the Luck Gods Math Rocks,

Having launched yesterday, we just had to remind people of this Backerkit being published under the Evil Hat Productions banner.

A roleplay game on its own, here's more information in regard to it in their own words:

The scars of war run deep. Noble Demons, Horrors, and Automata stalk the land. You are a Ranger, divinely appointed to protect the isolated pockets of humanity which remain.

Channel the power of your Deilith.  Scatter your essence into the world to work magic, weaving together Signature Spell Notes from your past and from the land around you.

Inspired by Final Fantasy X, the Xenoblade Chronicles, Magic Knight Rayearth, and more, Rangers of a Broken World is a refreshing new tabletop roleplaying game by designer Leon Richardson.

The rules are built for streamlined and inventive play: Choose which facet your Ranger is employing, specify a skill, mark off part of your character's Key (or don't!) and roll the dice. Each 5 or 6 you roll is a success.

Magic is similarly flexible, inviting you to invoke your own Personal Spell Notes and harmonize them with notes found in the world around you to build powerful eldritch chords.

The vibe is post-apocalyptic fantasy, but you are not fragile scavengers tentatively probing the cruel wastes.

You play fully realized heroes: blessed, wounded, flawed, and dedicated to powering through desperate times. This is a game where the choices you make matter more than which items you carry in your backpack.

The Cataclysm broke the world. The people look to their Rangers.

Join us. And usher in the Age of Hope and Song.

And remember: As soon as you back the project, you get immediate access to the full, text-only draft of the game along with the Rangers of a Broken World Roll20 Quickstart module. Back the game today, play it tonight!

Not ready to commit? Download the free 33-page preview we've posted at DriveThruRPG."

INTERVIEW: Pre-Campaign Interview with Leon Richardson about Rangers of a Broken World - Leon Richardson and Evil Hat Productions

Hail Mighty Readers and Followers of the Luck Gods Math Rocks,

We're always keeping an eye out for something not only different but delves into the players imagination with positive messages added.  This project, coming soon to Backerkit (Monday 12th October 2026), being published under the Evil Hat Productions banner, is a game where various aspects of mental health are presented within and also give players the chance to really delve into their characters so that they not only get to know them intimately but also look forward to replaying them in future adventures as they seek to make the world better for the inhabitants.

As such we couldn't wait to talk to the game creator Leon McDonald to get under the skin of this project and to learn more about the creation:

Totally Pawsome:  How would you surmise Rangers of a Broken World in one succinct paragraph?

Leon Richardson: Rangers of a Broken Word is a TTRPG about blessed survivalists who take care of humanity as the world rebounds from an apocalyptic disaster. The player characters, the titular Rangers, use survival skills, teamwork, and a free-form magic system to fight back against the ghostly remnants of the world's trauma, the unearthed weapons of the Last War, the ruthless Noble Demons, and more.

TP:  What is the key selling point of your game?

LR:  I think that varies depending who you talk to! A lot of players love the fridge-poetry style creative magic system, a lot of people are responding really well to the gorgeous art, and some people are excited about a hopeful post-apocalyptic setting where people take care of each other! My personal favorite thing about it is the sense of freedom.

TP:  You've mentioned in another interview that you utilised your mental disabilities to help create the various aspects of the classes, how would you say this has helped you in dealing with your own problems and how do you feel the game would aid others?  For example, is it designed to make dealing with mental illness more accessible or to help others understand what people who suffer go through?

LR:  I designed this game so that characters with disabilities are no big deal - there are no penalties or workarounds necessary. You can just say your character is disabled. I want players, both abled and disabled, to see disabled heroes in the game not as outliers, but just as people with the will to help others.

Because the characters are survivalists who have endured hardship, many of them will have associated traumas and injuries. This is, in the game's lore and the game's mechanics, no big deal. The characters' stats describe around how they solve problems, not their body or their mind. A person with a disability can play a character with the same disability easily, so someone who wants their character to represent them will, I hope, be happy with the game's systems!

As for myself, the Enduring Legionnaire, a class that can experience symptoms very much like depression if they overuse their necromantic abilities, is my absolute baby. Perhaps working on it reminded me that I can be heroic even when I feel hollow inside.

TP:  Is Rangers of a Broken world a complete game in itself or how would you incorporate the classes into another title such as D&D?

LR:  Rangers of a Broken World is its own complete game! I hope people find the mechanics approachable and satisfying, and I've included a lot of GM reference material to help people feel confident experimenting with a new game.

TP:  What do you think Rangers of a Broken world offers that no other game out there does?

LR:  I mean, there are a lot of roleplaying games! So, I'm sure if you look you'll find other games that are similar. But, I'm proud of the magic system. I've described it like "fridge poetry" - players take one word, called a Spell Note, from their own character sheet, and another from the GM's list describing the environment. They then have a two-word phrase like "Liberating Sunlight" or "Vicious Green" and they and the GM work together to decide what it means and how much Scatter it costs them. Players seem to enjoy coming up with creative and lovely ways to approach problems, and it brings me a lot of joy when I GM.

TP:  Having written under various company names and now having written for Evil Hat, what do you think is the key lesson you've learned when you sit down to create something new?

LR:  I stand by the adage "finished is better than good". I daresay my greatest strength as a creator is the diligence to sit down and write a project out from start to finish. Once it's finished, then it can be refined and edited and perfected. But, you can't do any of that if all you have is an idea.

Rangers of a Broken World, I might say, was playtested in the podcast Sword of Symphonies for years! So, it's gone through a lot of refinements since I came up with the idea in the first place. But, turning it from "idea" to "draft" is the beginning of that process.

TP:  Rangers of a Broken World, deals with characters utilising "blurring" and "scattering" as key mechanics, how do you feel they help the player craft their characters identity?

LR:  Blur and Scatter are measures of how much the character is "outside" their body. When they cast spells, they push their wills outside their body to have an impact on the outside world. Their will doesn't entirely return - Scatter is a measure of how much of them is left outside. It's similar to dissociation, one of my own mental health symptoms.

Blur, on the other hand, increases as the character uses abilities from their special ally. For example, the Legionnaire I mentioned earlier blurs into the dead, until they feel like they might be dead themselves.

Both of these help a player envision their character's interiority, and the ways their Ranger may be reacting emotionally and mentally to their adventure!

TP:  The artwork within has a very Art Nouveau feeling to it, was this a conscious decision to help the immersion of the mental aspects of the game or was it just pure coincidence?

LR:  I wanted an Art Nouveau vibe partly because it is dreamy and ethereal, and partly because the game is also about a connection to nature. Art Nouveau, with its organic shapes and nature themes, was a wonderful way to drive home this naturalistic theming visually, and our graphic designer (the peerless Cris Viana) immediately knew what I was after and brought it to life!

TP:  What do you think will attract players to keep returning to the game?

LR:  My hope is that players will be able to get attached to their characters, characters that are wounded and flawed and vulnerable and lead rich inner lives, enough to keep returning to the game again and again!

TP:  What can you tell us about your future projects?

LR:  I'm constantly working on things! I'm working on a blatant Shin Megami Tensei fangame about the casino at the end over everything, a linoprint Tarot deck, a podcast about games that my friend and I make up, and a visual novel! I also study calligraphy in my free time. My friends tease me about being a workaholic, and I can't say they're wrong, but it's just my personality, I suppose.

Thank you,

NEWS ROUND-UP: 31st May 2026 - 6th June 2026 - Various

Hail Mighty Readers and Followers of the Luck Gods Math Rocks,

There are days when we get so many notifications that we worry we don't carry enough news for all our readers out there, so as such we've added a new feature over the last couple of weeks where, those articles that aren't mentioned get included in the news round up at the end of the week.  Here's whats been happening:

Archvillain Games have sent out the latest update for their Gamefound: Archvillain Games: Encounters: Death and Beyond campaign and with just four days to go, its a time to not delay getting your pledge in.
.
Now with over $600,000 in pledges against their $15,000 goal, they've unlocked five free miniatures for all who pledge to the campaign and with over a $600 saving for the bigger pledges (which can be split into more manageable payment chunks (see their site for details), and also with customs friendly shipping.

In addition to this Erevan’s Guide to Death & Beyond: Archvillains first Kickstarter campaign is on special offer if you didn't pick it up originally.  For more information please go here.

Elderbrain's Backerkit campaign has now closed for their Spawn of the Mindrender book.  They had this to say:
"Greetings, cherished Hive Mind!
What an incredible finish!

Thanks to your unwavering support and phenomenal enthusiasm, we've reached a funding amount of $218,395 in these final exhilarating moments!

Your passionate engagement, insightful suggestions, and genuine excitement have made this campaign an unforgettable experience. We're deeply grateful to have such a dedicated community, and we promise—the adventure will be amazing and absolutely worth it. We can’t wait to get it into your hands!

Starting immediately, we’ll prepare the BackerKit surveys to collect information on your pledges and give you the opportunity to upgrade them or select add-ons you missed during the live campaign. We will also be working closely with backers from the Spawns Hero Box pledge level to create their custom NPC portraits and with Spawns Legend Box backers to specify their custom full-body NPCs and Windrip City locations. We will integrate these images into the final edit.

Once the surveys are complete, we will start fulfillment of your legacy PDF rewards for Crown of the Oathbreaker, Torrents of the Spellhoarder, and Scepter of the Lightbringer. For physical rewards that include our three existing books and accessories, you will have the option to request immediate shipment (however, double shipping rates will apply to Spawns of the Mindrender rewards when they are available).

We’re beyond excited and humbled to bring this book and its accessories to life and fully realize them with you. Your feedback has been instrumental!

From the deepest reaches of our collective gratitude,

Your friends at Team Elderbrain"

Crippled God Foundry have reached out for those who have play tested the alpha of The Dread Torch to send them feedback.

To download the rules so you can provide them with feedback please go here.

In addition to this they want to know:
"Would you like us to continue providing monthly D&D 5E-compatible content for the miniatures (such as lore, stat blocks, encounters, or adventures), or is this content not something you are interested in?

To be transparent, the theme of our miniature releases will not change. We will continue creating fantasy miniatures and terrain inspired by popular tabletop RPGs, movies, literature, and other fantasy influences.

As part of our future plans, we intend to focus on the development of the Dread Torch game system alongside our community. However, we want to hear your thoughts and preferences so we can make the best decisions moving forward."

Steamforged Games, have released the mid-year update for Warmachine that they've been promising for a little while, here's what they've had to say about it:
"
...we want to introduce small, targeted changes to key outlier models. We’ve changed only the models we feel really need to be changed right now, and nothing more. This isn’t a full January update. This is, in video game language, a patch.

To reassure folks, our intention is not to remove powerful models from the game, nor to supercharge weak models into the stratosphere. The aim is always to adjust outlier models to help their win rates move closer to 50% and for play rates to be less concentrated around specific leaders.

We do review the win rates and play rates of models as shown on Longshanks. However, this is only one aspect of data we review to inform changes.

The Warmachine team remains committed to regularly playing games at clubs, events, and on our own kitchen tables. Between our own experiences, the incredibly valuable feedback of our playtesters, and available public data, we strive to be as well-equipped as possible to make judgement calls for the good of Warmachine.

For information on the changes please go here.

June also see's the release of their monthly STL's which brings cursed fellblades, volatile rocket crews, wandering swordsmen, and enough shattered ruins to drag your tabletops straight into the wastelands of Immoren.  For more information go here.

Loot Studio's has announced that they are running their 3D Printing Course again, entitled 3D Printing Hero.  To learn more please go here.
In addition to this they've also sent a reminder about May's STL release:
"One of the most culturally wealthy places on the continent, Panshaw is plagued by misfortune. Gnolls, vampires, cultists, and dragons have caused trouble for the city and its inhabitants, threatening to annihilate such culture and leave nothing for future societies.

After all these years of crisis, the city is still, but tremors have made the Magistrates of Panshaw notice that something darker and more dangerous is living beneath their soil.

The Undercaves were sitting just a few feet under the beloved Panshaw, as big as a continent, with a self-sustaining ecosystem. The problem is that the danger lurking in the darkness was destabilizing its structural pillars.

Inhabited by braves and fools, the Undercaves were a threat like no other. Forming a trio to descend the hole, the Magistrate called heroes to solve the problem and report to them so that they could start rebuilding the city of Panshaw.

As nothing is easy in Panshaw, this sick, strange darkness comes with a Deep Dragon creeping in and haunting every time. Her offspring is already being seen by other evil creatures. Even though dark elves shouldn’t trouble her, something worse is threatening the offspring, and now she lays her eggs just beneath Panshaw!

With all these problems, they could’ve miscounted the webs from all the spiders…"

Cast n' Play have also announced this months (Junes) release titled "Rise of the Undead.  To purchase the STL's please go here, and pictured (left) are our personal favourites of the Undead climbing out of their graves, we need more things like this for our tabletops please people.

If you haven't already ordered your copy of Warhammer: The Old World TTRPG, Cubicle 7 wanted us to let you know that its now available for shipping (we're assuming its back in stock with them having fulfilled the massive amount of orders from those who went of the mega deal.)  To order yours please go here.

To discuss and chat about all things Cyberpunk TCG, go to their discord here.
